Does Medicaid Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. Medicaid is the largest payer for substance use treatment in the United States. Under federal law and the Affordable Care Act expansion, Medicaid plans cover screening, medical detox, inpatient and residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, outpatient therapy and medications for opioid and alcohol use disorder. Most states deliver Medicaid through managed-care organizations, and the treatment center must be in that organization’s network. Copays are minimal or zero, but pre-authorization is usually required for residential care.

Medicaid vs. Medicare

Medicare is the federal program for people 65 and older and some people with disabilities; Medicaid is the state-run program for people with limited income. Some people qualify for both. Medicare also covers substance use treatment. Our admissions team can verify either.

What to Expect With Medicaid

• Network rules: you must use a center contracted with your specific managed-care plan, not just “Medicaid.”
• Pre-authorization: required for detox and residential care; the center obtains it.
• Cost: usually no or minimal copays.
• Coverage reviews: plans authorize residential care in stages based on medical necessity.

How to Check Your Coverage

• Online: submit your insurance details and our team verifies your benefits directly with your plan, usually the same day.
• By phone: call our admissions line any time; we confirm in-network status, estimated out-of-pocket costs and pre-authorization requirements on the call.
• What you will need: your insurance card (member ID and group number) and the name of the person who will be treated.
