Find Drug and Alcohol Treatment in Minnesota That Works
No matter the season or your interests, the number of places to explore in Minnesota is endless. You can bring out the bikes and hit the trails near tree-lined lakes and soaring river bluffs, or catch some walleyes in the fall. Whip out the skis and snowmobile for your winter adventures. Log some miles and prepare the paddle boards for late spring and summer. And of course, you can enjoy the state’s art and culinary attractions all year-round.
The Land of 10,000 Lakes is home to more than 5 million people as well as the first Target department store. It’s also the birthplace of musicians Bob Dylan and Prince. Football fans know the state for its 50-year-old Packers-Vikings rivalry as they sport their horned helmets in the U.S. Bank Stadium every year. Minnesota is booming from corner to corner, from its many escapade opportunities to its growing job market.
But sadly, The North Star State has not been exempt from the substance abuse problem plaguing the nation. While it sees fewer overdose deaths and drug-related hospitalizations than other states, even one overdose and drug-related hospitalization is too many. Minnesota drug detox centers as well as Minnesota alcohol detox centers offer various treatment programs to combat this growing concern for the state. There are also hundreds of other treatment options and resources all over the country that can help, including toll-free hotlines.

Minnesota Opioid Crisis
Since the late ‘90s, opioids have been had catastrophic effects on the country, due to an increase in prescriptions and illicit use. This has resulted in abuse, addiction and overdose. The state of Minnesota has experienced many of these effects, with 557 opioid overdose deaths in 2011. That number remained above 500 every year after that, including 2016, when it rose to 664 deaths. To combat the problem, pharmacists have begun prescribing fewer opioid medications. The number dropped from 60 prescriptions for every 100 residents to 46.9. Rehab facilities and national hotlines are also making efforts to lower the number of overdoses by offering treatment and counseling services, which you can learn more about below.

Minnesota Drug Abuse
From prescription opioids to heroin, there are many drugs that men, women and children abuse in Minnesota, resulting in hospitalization or fatal overdose. Hennepin County saw the most overdose deaths from 2000 to 2014, with nearly 1,400 deaths. Alcohol abuse has also been a problem. The good news is that treatment admissions for some drugs, including methamphetamines, decreased in Hennepin and Ramsey counties from 2015 to 2016. In addition, alcohol and drug rehab centers in Minnesota treat dozens of addiction cases every year to lower the number of those affected.
In the Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area, heroin treatment admissions accounted for 17.3 percent of all treatment admissions in 2016. This was the highest number ever recorded, and it has been steadily climbing over the the last few years.
These deaths involved various drugs, with most of them caused by prescription pain relievers and heroin. This is significantly more than the number of Minnesotans who died in car accidents (374 fatalities).
The number of accidental cocaine-related deaths in Hennepin County rose from 26 to 34 deaths from 2015 to 2016. Despite this increase however, cocaine still accounts for the lowest number of treatment admissions as compared to other drugs.
Within the first half of 2013, marijuana was the most commonly abused drug at 16 percent of total treatment admissions. This is slightly less than the previous year, when it accounted for 16.3 percent of admissions.
Drug abuse trends nationwide fluctuate from year to year, so there’s always a reason for hope. While some numbers may rise, others may fall. That’s why alcohol and drug treatment facilities in Minnesota and throughout the country offer various programs to not only treat addiction but to prevent relapse. But before choosing a facility to meet your needs, it’s important to thoroughly consider your options, both inside and outside of the state.
