Drug & Alcohol Rehab, Detox & Treatment Resources

The above excerpt is from poet and notable New Rochelle resident, James J. Montague. Montague wasn’t the only person with an appreciation for city. In November of 2008, Business Week rated New Rochelle as the best place to live in New York State and one of the best cities for raising children. New Rochelle ranked at 13 out of 550 cities. New Rochelle was the only Westchester city even on the list.

In 2014, the community authorities in New Rochelle, New York approved a plan and allocated a $149 million-dollar budget for major renovations throughout 3 sections of the city. The plans include a marina, recreational and entertainment venues and a renewal of infrastructure in the appointed jurisdictions. These improvements are expected to be completed by 2024.

However, New Rochelle isn’t all growth and lucrative expansion. The bewitching city of New Rochelle has fallen under the spell of a devastating epidemic: alcohol and drug use disorders. Substance abuse is becoming a national epidemic. Both illegal and legal substances like alcohol and prescription medicines are destroying the lives on individuals and families. What can be done about this issue? Those who need treatment for drug or alcohol addiction must ask for it.

Finding Help & Recovery in New Rochelle, NY

Alcohol & Drug Rehab Centers in New Rochelle, New York

Admitting you’re not in control of your condition is a commendable step forward on the journey to health. You are on the pathway to recovery. It is up to you whether or not you stay the course. There are three main types of rehabilitative facility and a plethora of resources for patients, but most clinics can be divided into three programs: inpatient, partial hospitalization and outpatient treatment programs.

Residential Treatment Programs

Residential treatment programs are also known as inpatient programs. You will be asked to stay at the facility during your treatment. A team of medical and psychiatric professionals will evaluate and observe your progress throughout the treatment. Retreat-based programs provide the patient with an extra level of support from the circumstances that enable substance misuse. Participants are expected to submit to a detoxification stage, individual and group cognitive behavioral counselling and aftercare.

Partial Hospitalization Programs

Partial hospitalization programs share many characteristics with both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. The difference being patients are typically asked to remain on-site during the detox phase of the recovery program. Once detox has been achieved, patients will return home and commute back and forth from the clinic for therapy.

Outpatient Treatment Programs

Similar to retreat-based therapy and partial hospitalization programs, the exception being an outpatient treatment program does not have a residential component. Participants commute to the facility for each prescribed therapeutic treatment.

Retreat-based treatment programs provide significantly more support for patients with a use disorder. Removing the obstacles, stresses and environment factors which contribute to your condition, even just for a little while may aid in this transformation.

Detox Centers

The harsh reality of having a substance use disorder is in the beginning of recovery, the patient must go through withdrawal and detox. Don’t be intimidated by this step, there are medication-assisted treatments (MATs) that may significantly reduce discomfort for misusers of prescription opioids, heroin and alcohol. MATs like buprenorphine, naltrexone and methadone fool the brain’s opioid receptors by providing an opioid that connects to the brain in a similar way to the misused substance. This allows the patient to focus on their mental and spiritual recovery, instead of suffering through withdrawal symptoms.

Detoxification is an important part of the healing process, but it is not the entire treatment. A quality detox center will provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and stress the importance of aftercare. If a facility promises you instant results of any kind, treat it as a red flag and move onto another program.

Substance use disorder is a serious, chronic, complicated disease. It will require continual adjustments and ongoing coping mechanisms to achieve long-term sobriety. The misuse of substances cannot be fixed with just detoxification, because that misuse is the symptom. The triggers that cause you to use are the root of the illness.

AA Meetings

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Meetings

Alcoholics Anonymous has been helping people stay sober for over 8 decades. AA is a prolific, international, self-sustaining, non-profit organization. Alcoholics Anonymous has a spiritual foundation, but doesn’t affiliate with any particular religion or dogma. Participants are asked to volunteer testimonials to the group as they take the 12 steps and attempt to live by the 12 traditions. Sponsorship is another supportive element found in AA. A sponsor is a fellow participant who is further along in completing the 12 steps, who mentors and supports the sponsored member. AA meetings are always free and confidential.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Meetings

Narcotics Anonymous is primarily the same as AA, except the members of the group are struggling with the misuse of narcotics, instead of alcohol. Narcotics Anonymous is also an international, self- sustaining non-profit organization. NA operates from a spiritual foundation without affiliating with a specific religion or creed. Participants volunteer their testimonial evidence from their life-experiences along the 12 steps and from the sober perspective of the 12 traditions. Narcotics Anonymous meetings are always free and confidential. There’s plenty of accessible NA literature available on their website for more information.

SMART Recovery Meetings

SMART Recovery Meetings

SMART Recovery is a departure from traditional aftercare like Narcotics Anonymous. SMART is an acronym for Self-Management for Addiction Recovery Training. SMART Recovery acknowledges the chronic component of substance use disorders and employs a scientific foundation, instead of a spiritual one. Participants do not volunteer to present testimonials to the group. SMART Recovery prefers an open conversation among members to foster friendship and encouragement. SMART Recovery prescribes a four point program for participants:

  1. Sustain motivation and enhance maintenance strategies for abstaining from substance abuse.
  2. Cope with impulses.
  3. Balance feelings and behaviors.
  4. Logically evaluating the difference between momentary and enduring satisfactions.

SMART Recovery’s program authority is scientific knowledge and rational thought. If you’re interested in attending a SMART Recovery meeting it is advised to call ahead to discuss your suitability for the specific group.

Al-Anon and Nar-Anon Meetings

Al-Anon and Nar-Anon Meetings

Al-Anon is another sibling of the international non-profit, Alcoholics Anonymous. However, Al-Anon meetings are a fellowship where your family and friends can find comfort and a welcoming community. Al-Anon concentrates its efforts on the support system of the patient to provide education and comradery concerning the patient’s alcohol misuse. Nar-Anon is akin to Narcotics Anonymous meetings, but they put their focus on the community surrounding individuals with a narcotics use disorder. Family and friends may need a place to recharge their emotionally batteries and connect with others in similar situations.

A substance use disorder isn’t a lack of morals, it is a disease, like diabetes or hypertension. This chronic condition deserves the same medical attention as any other ailment which plagues many populations in the United States. Consider stepping away from the people, situations and environments which exacerbate your condition.
