Got a Substance Use Disorder? There’s an App for That!

Table of Contents

Relapse is a real concern when there is a substance use disorder present. In fact, going back to using drugs or alcohol is a common scenario early in recovery. This is just one of the reasons that it is essential to stay close to professional support when moving away from addiction treatment, whether it be a counselor, treatment center, or physician.

While there are many ways to build a strong support system and avoid relapse, you can also now usetechnology to help you stay sober. One group has created an app that will allow its users to maintain a close link with their health care providers.

Mobile App Developed to Fight Opioid Epidemic

Opioid addiction remains a prolific problem across North America and opioids are strongly associated with relapse in early recovery. Even after attending addiction treatment, a patient with a substance use disorder needs a healthy support system in place to maintain abstinence.Sobriety appscan help in this ongoing process.

Farmington, CT-basedTryCycle Data Systemshas developed a unique app that is now being pilot tested by substance abuse treatment programs in Old Saybrook and Meriden as a tool for reducing opioid relapses and overdoses. The app provides real-time data to clinicians, who can then intervene with patients in times of crisis as well as forge stronger support relationships.

What You Need to Know About the TryCycle App

TryCycle’s new addiction treatment app is called “Digital Tether.” It is designed to change the relationship between physicians, therapists, and their patients. Because data is relayed in real-time, a health care provider can contact a patient to provide support and potentially help a patient to weather a crisis.

The app will routinely ask patients a series of short questions, which ranks such things as their level of happiness, loneliness, anger, hunger, and mood swings on a scale of 1 to 9. The app also captures the client’s location and asks for a brief description of their current activities.

Using artificial intelligence and data analytics, the software can determine where patients are on a risk continuum for possible relapse. The app will also alert healthcare providers when these rankings “spike” so that there is the opportunity to intervene. Currently, the app is being piloted with several hundred people, and its use is being paid for by Hartford Healthcare.
