Valium Addiction Self-Assessment Quiz

If you are concerned about a Valium addiction in yourself or a loved one, take this quiz to help you decide if you need to seek rehab or medical assistance.

Take the Quiz

Am I Addicted to Valium?

This quiz is a self-guided assessment created from the 5th version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which is the standard criteria for diagnosing mental health and substance use disorders. This assessment contains “yes” or “no” questions relative to your Valium use during the last 12 months.

If you’re looking for answers about an alcohol use disorder, this quiz does not contain questions about alcohol abuse, but you can take this quiz for alcoholism instead.

If you’re concerned about the prescription drug use of a loved one, take the quiz Is My Loved One Addicted To Prescription Drugs?

Valium Abuse Signs & Symptoms

When a substance use disorder develops, people often show both behavioral and physical signs of addiction. Behavioral signs of Valium addiction include:

  • Spending time with different friends than usual
  • Not caring about appearance
  • Poor performance in school or at work
  • Missing school or work
  • Losing interest in previously favorite activities
  • Legal problems
  • A change in eating or sleeping habits
  • Interpersonal problems

Physical signs of Valium addiction include:

  • Poor memory
  • Hostility
  • Irritability
  • Vivid or disturbing dreams
  • Sleepiness
  • Relaxed mood

Valium Addiction Statistics

If you struggle with Valium, you may feel like you are alone, but Valium use and addiction are very common.

  • Valium (diazepam) is one of the most commonly prescribed benzodiazepines, accounting for more than five million prescriptions per year in the U.S.
  • About 16% of opioid overdoses also involve benzodiazepines like Valium.
  • Around 0.2% of American adults have benzodiazepine use disorders, but this number rises to just under 2% among only Americans who are prescribed benzodiazepines.
  • Most people who misuse benzodiazepines like Valium do so to relax or sleep.
  • Adults aged 18 to 25 years have the highest risk of benzodiazepine misuse.

This self-guided assessment was created to help you evaluate  your Valium use, but this quiz is not intended to replace a proper, clinical diagnosis of Valium addiction. You can use the results of this assessment as a guide to help you determine if your Valium use is problematic, recognize the signs and symptoms of Valium use disorder and seek treatment for Valium addiction if necessary. Review your results with your physician or call The Recovery Village to speak with a representative about your Valium use disorder and the options for treatment programs.

Based on your Valium use only, please answer “yes” or “no” to each question. In the past 12 months, have you:

Taken Valium for any reason other than for medical purposes?
Continued to use Valium despite the personal consequences it has created?
Taken Valium for longer than you intended?
Needed Valium to get through the day or feel normal?
Unsuccessfully tried to scale back your Valium use?
Used heavier doses of Valium in order to achieve the same effects?
Experienced hypersensitivity, sleep disturbances or bouts of anxiety after trying to reduce or stop using Valium?
Compulsively sought Valium despite knowing the health, social and legal consequences?
Stopped engaging in hobbies because of Valium use?
Reduced communication with loved ones?
Had a family member express concern about your Valium use?
Driven a vehicle after taking Valium?
