Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder characterized as a prevalent pattern of emotional instability regarding interpersonal relationships and self-image, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5). The traits of BPD typically develop in adolescence or early adulthood. Now BPD is associated with a disorder of emotional regulation and not with schizophrenia at all. Most psychiatrists and mental health treatment professionals relate BPD to other trauma-induced disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
According to a study by Dr. Bridget F. Grant et al., approximately 6 percent of people in the United States have BPD. Of that 6 percent, only 20 percent of people with BPD go through treatment. People with BPD usually have co-occurring disorders: approximately 60 percent of people with BPD also have anxiety disorders and 50.9 percent of BPD patients have co-occurring mood disorders like depression. In addition to co-occurring mental health disorders, about half of people with BPD have substance use disorders.
If BPD goes untreated, co-occurring conditions like mental health disorders and substance use disorders can develop and make managing symptoms even harder. That’s why it’s important to recognize if you have BPD so that you can seek treatment for the disorder to learn how to best manage its symptoms.
