Kadian – See Related Topics

Patients suffering with long-term, chronic, and severe pain (and sometimes coupled with end-of-life situations like those found with certain forms of terminal cancer) often require medication that works for an entire day. In these situations, physicians may prescribe Kadian – a time-released drug containing morphine that allows the patient to be dosed once every 24 hours. In its initial state, the drug is extremely powerful because of the high dose of morphine that it includes. When used as suggested, the time-release effect meters out the morphine to provide a continuous and regulated amount throughout the day. This makes the drug safe for use and not likely to be abused when used in a healthcare environment.

However, Kadian has been known to show up on the streets as an illicit drug. Users seek it out for its pain-relieving actions as well as the euphoric effects that it can produce. Those who take the drug for recreational purposes sometimes tamper with its form to either elevate or expediate the associated high. After crushing the pill, they either inhale or inject the drug which provides a high like that of heroin but is more intense. Tampering with any drug is dangerous, though doing so with extended-release drugs can be even more dangerous, as there can be a sudden and very high dose of the drug introduced into the user’s system that can cause serious and even life-threatening reactions.
