Nightmare disorder is a condition clinically known as parasomnia. Parasomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by anxiety-producing experiences that occur either as someone is falling asleep, while they’re sleeping or when they’re waking up. The cause of nightmares isn’t precisely known although possible triggers may include stress and anxiety, trauma and certain medications.
It’s relatively common to have an occasional nightmare, but nightmare disorder is rare.
