According to the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 8.5 million Americans had both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition that year. Approximately 51 percent of these 8.5 million people received any mental health or substance abuse treatment during 2017.
There are several approaches to addiction and mental health disorder treatment. Because addiction and mental health conditions frequently co-occur, it is critical that people in treatment for co-occurring disorders get treatment for both substance use and mental health issues at the same time.
Some of these approaches may include:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Dialectical behavioral therapy
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Intensive therapy
