Narcan is a name-brand version of naloxone, a medication used to treat opioid overdose. Naloxone comes in different forms, but Narcan is unique because it is administered as a nasal spray to act as an overdose antidote. An opioid epidemic has swept the United States, leaving a wake of overdose victims in its wake. A drug overdose can be deadly, especially when prescription painkillers or illicit substances like heroin are involved. Narcan and other life-saving medications have helped turn the tide and save lives. But receiving a dose of Narcan is only the beginning of the healing process after an opioid episode.

Because Narcan is administered in emergency situations, it’s imperative that the person receiving the antidote be treated for the full range of symptoms and complications that accompany an opioid overdose. For many, this means a stay in the hospital followed by a comprehensive care plan to address addiction or substance misuse. Many people who overdose on opioids do so after prolonged use and many suffer from substance use disorder. Treatment may include medical detox, inpatient care, outpatient programming and aftercare.
