According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5), personality disorders are characterized as an ongoing pattern of thoughts and behaviors that differs significantly from someone’s culture. The onset of most personality disorders occurs in adolescence or early adulthood. A personality disorder can cause someone distress or impair their ability to live independently.
About 10 percent of the population is affected by a personality disorder. The most prevalent disorder is obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) which affects 8 percent of the population. Research has shown that 65 to 90 percent of people who seek treatment for addiction have a co-occurring personality disorder.
People who live with a personality disorder have a higher chance of suicidal ideations and suicide attempts. Seventy-five percent of people with personality disorders attempt suicide and 10 percent of people with personality disorders commit suicide.
