According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5), personality disorders are characterized as an ongoing pattern of thoughts and behaviors that differs significantly from someone’s culture. The onset of most personality disorders occurs in adolescence or early adulthood. A personality disorder can cause someone distress or impair their ability to live independently.

About 10 percent of the population is affected by a personality disorder. The most prevalent disorder is obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) which affects 8 percent of the population. Research has shown that 65 to 90 percent of people who seek treatment for addiction have a co-occurring personality disorder.

People who live with a personality disorder have a higher chance of suicidal ideations and suicide attempts. Seventy-five percent of people with personality disorders attempt suicide and 10 percent of people with personality disorders commit suicide.

Living with an untreated personality disorder can be dangerous for yourself and people around you. If you find yourself wondering, “Do I have a personality disorder?” there are personality disorder assessments you can take to give you an idea what you may be dealing with before you talk with a physician to determine an official diagnosis.
