Overdose Awareness Day: How Anyone Can Participate

Overdose deaths surpass the number of car crash fatalities in the US. The Recovery Village surveyed thousands of individuals since COVID 19, and the rate of substance abuse is increasing by 63%. The survey included 1,000 American adults (ages 18 and older) about their use of drugs and alcohol in the past month.

So, how do we combat this epidemic? Together.

The Miss America Organization asked that very question, and in partnership with The Recovery Village, we have compiled a resource guide and a toolkit that anyone can use to find a way to support the change.

#RealTalk2020

The Numbers

The results of the study appear to echo the many state and government conducted research (included below). The Recovery Village went a step further, and we were able to identify:

  • 55% reported an increase in past-month alcohol consumption, with 18% reporting a significant increase
  • 36% reported an increase in illicit drug use

The participants were asked why they were prompted to use substances within the last month. Of the respondents:

  • 53% were trying to cope with stress
  • 39% were trying to relieve boredom
  • 32% were trying to cope with mental health symptoms, such as anxiety or depression

Understanding The Importance of Overdose Awareness

When we speak about addiction and recovery it’s important not to gloss over the term overdose.

Overdose Awareness Day comes around every year on August 31.  This international commemorative day was started in 2001 and aims to raise awareness about overdose, while highlighting the fact that overdose death is preventable.
